Just an FYI concerning waterfowl hunting season. If you haven’t checked out O.D.N.R.’s web site lately, and are planning a birdwatching outing to either a State Park or a State Wildlife Area, here is some useful information.

Hunting season for Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Greater White-fronted Geese, and Brant’s closes on January 16th in the Northern Zone.

Hunting season for Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Greater White-fronted Geese, and Brant’s closes January 30th in the Southern Zone.

Hunting Season for Ducks, American Coots, and Mergansers closes on January 23rd in the Southern Zone.

Remember to be careful out there when birding in hunting zones.

  1. Don’t forget about Muzzleloader season. It runs Jan. 8, 2011 to Jan. 11, 2011 for white-tailed deer. You should wear hunter orange if you are out and about in a hunting zone.

    • I totally agree with your comment, however with us being in the grasp of winter us birders tend to flock to large lakes and wildlife areas. This is the time for great varieties of waterfowl. Sometimes duck and geese hunters can be a bit testy when their space is closed in upon by birders, whether the birder has the right to be there or not. We just need to be prepared to share some space with duck hunters that we normally don’t have to share.
